Behind the Blade: Why We Still Craft Our Own Swords (1885–Today)

When people see a Japanese sword on a shelf, they usually notice the shape, the finish, the presence. What they don't see—what almost never appears in photos—is everything behind it.

The Craft Behind the Blade

Our workshop's connection to sword-making began in 1885. At that time, the world was changing rapidly, but in our small town, craftsmen were still making blades using techniques that had been passed down through generations.

In the 1980s, our founder began studying katana design as part of a broader exploration into East Asian metallurgy and traditional crafts. What started as academic interest became a lifetime commitment to keeping these techniques alive.

Why We Don'toutsource

Today, there are many ways to produce a sword. You can source blades from various manufacturers, add finishing touches, and call it a craft product. We understand why some companies take this approach. It's faster, cheaper, and easier to scale.

But we have never done this.

Every Kageforge5 blade is made in our contracted workshop—one that has been making blades for us since the beginning. We control the process from start to finish. We know the steel we use, we understand the heat treatment, we approve every blade before it leaves the workshop.

This is the only way we know how to make a sword we're proud to put our name on.

What This Means for You

When you receive a Kageforge5 sword, you're not just receiving a product. You're receiving the result of a process that prioritizes quality over speed, tradition over convenience, and authenticity over appearance.

The blade has weight. The balance has been tested. The finish has been checked. This is not an accident—it's the result of a commitment that began over 130 years ago and continues today.

The Name on the Blade

We put our name on every sword we make. Not because we're required to, but because we believe in what we make. Every piece carries our commitment to the craft—and to the people who trust us to help them find the right sword.
